Nisei Week 2005

Nisei Week 2005
Originally uploaded by sushi1026.

My sister, cousin, and her daughter met up in J-town in LA for a matsuri (festival) on Sunday - actually, the last day of "Nisei Week." We watched taiko drummers (one group's overwhelming expression of joy as they drummed moved my sister to tears...I love my lil' sister!), watched a geta tap dance routine (dancers from Kagoshima rocking to Japanese hip-hop music in wooden sandals with heels - ha!), listened to this year's All-Japan Karaoke winner (hmm...) and danced to ondo music in the street (check out the Elvises in the photo). After all this, I seriously thought that I need to do some re-immersion in my culture. We ate a Japanese style snow cone (with azuki red beans and condensed milk) and a uni-ikura-don (sea urchin-salmon roe over sushi rice...yup, it's only for the strong, and a food-texture-sensitive person's absolute nightmare...but so delicious! We ordered it at a restaurant called Sushi 333 East.) Unfortunately, that was yesterday...I am so close to dropping out of school due to my lack of motivation. Any words of encouragement would be deeply appreciated :)

Youcandoit!! You'll just have to get used to getting back into the swing of things. :) On the other hand, it sounds like you had a good time at the festival. That's so great! I would loved to have seen the geta tap dancing routine! Being that I can barely walk in geta, just the thought of it impresses me- plus it sounds like a fun thing to watch! :) The snow cones you had reminds me of shave ice back home. You can get it with azuki beans and/or vanilla ice cream on the bottom. I've never actually ventured into the kind with azuki beans (it didn't appeal to me when I was little) but I think it sounds yummy now!

Starting a new semester was always a hard one for me, too. But you are already to your second year and the rest will go by so fast. Plus, you will have more time this semester as well with your new work schedule. Once you get back into the swing of things, you will be glad you kept going. Youcandoit!!

You must continue with school. Girl, you inspire me! You can't give up. I believe in you and I know that you can do it. Anyone that runs a marathon and knits can accomplish anything. Cool post about the festival. I've been viewing my fair share here. If you really want to get back to your roots, you can come visit me. :-)

I'm right there with ya sister! I don't know how you do it, work nearly full time and go to LAW SCHOOL...but you do!! You definitely are an inspiration to me too. Good luck and hang in there, it will all be worth it in the end.
