Salad Days

So, after taking a break during the holidays and immediately following my scrumptious birthday dinner (my plan for the holidays was to embrace being fat until my birthday), I am now pledged to being back on track with the "working out thing" and the "eating better thing." You know what this means: for one thing- more salad and veggies for me. First observation: salad does not taste anywhere near as delectable as steak and garlic crab. Second observation: a good salad is really dependent on a tasty salad dressing. I'm on the hunt for a good one, and my current strategy on trying to find one (randomly picking out a new one every week at the Whole Foods) is not really not proving to be very efficient . So, if anyone has any favorites they want to offer up as suggestions, please do. I would greatly appreciate it, and so would my taste buds!

Second call for help. Has anyone had this problem: knitting-related skin issues? This sounds weird, I know, but here's the sitch: the skin on the tips of my right thumb and forefinger is dry and cracking. I know, eew. Is this common? Has anyone else experienced this? It's only those two fingers, and this just happened over the weekend...after, might I add, I had been working on a new project, with a new yarn. I can't really see how the yarn could be to blame, but I don't know what else it could be. I really hope it isn't though, because I only just started this sweater:

This is going to be a simple turtleneck pullover, in Twilley's Freedom Wool's "Autumn" colorway. Yes, I have joined the Freedom Wool fan club. Since Julia first introduced me to this luxurious yarn, I knew I would have to try it. I loved the colorway that she and Dis chose, but I wanted to try something a little different, so I chose this one. I'm still kind of iffy on it. Sometimes I am in love with it, sometimes I think the part of me that is in love with it is a little whacked out- I mean, red, orange, and purple- seriously? Would I wear this? But then, I can't help but think this could turn into a cute, spunky little sweater, and I am having fun knitting it, there's no doubt about that. . .Except for my chapped fingertips, of course...

I think it is knitting up cute - the colors are coming out fairly balanced, too. Beside I keep picturing the end product, which I think would look really cute on you.

Personally, I love that colorway. When we were in Cleveland for our girls' weekend I bought out the Moorland and my best friend bought out the Autumn, relieving me of the burden of spending even more of my hard-earned cash. I think you'll wear it, and if you don't you have a friend who will!

Salad dressing - we like Annie's Naturals and Trader Joes - they both have good Shitake Sesame and Balsalmic lines. Also, you may want to make your own. I do an occasional orange or lemon vinegarette with red wine vinegar, olive oil and salt and pepper. Homemade is divine and not to difficult. You can make it on Sunday and it keeps for a few weeks. I'm also a fan of "macho" salads - filled with fruits, nuts and cheeses. If your body thinks you're starving it will hold onto fat. Be sure not to go into the realm of deprivation!

Being in the same boat as you -- getting rid of the Christmas pudge -- I can second the Annie's salad dressing as a tasty choice. My favorite is the low fat raspberry vinaigrette. A bowl of spinach, a couple dollops of goat cheese [your biggest bang for the calorie buck cheese-wise], maybe a few cranraisins and/or a few nuts and some of that dressing and it's heaven!

I love the colors on your new project!

The yarn might just be aggravating winter skin dryness. Do you have some intense lotion (like Burt's Bees Hand Salve or something like that) that you can put on your fingertips before you go to bed for a while?

Salad dressing - Seeds of Change French Tomato Vinaigerette has been my favorite for the last several years.

I agree with Julia about Annies's Naturals. I love the rasberry and the different balsamic dressings they have. I also sometimes make my own. Mix even amounts of oil and balsamic. Mix in some honey and lemon. Simple and I like it. I also like your sweater. The color is fun. Wish I could've seen you while I was at home. Come visit me here in Nippon.

It does look good. I'm often surprised by what colors can end up looking good together.

Salad Dressing: I can't remember the brand, but I used to love a Raspberry Vinaigrette I got at Whole Foods back when I lived near one. Around here, we usually just make our own dressing. It ends up being a mustard vinaigrette. Either put whole grain mustard or dijon in with some wine vinegar and salt and pepper. Mix up really well. Then, add some olive and mix again. Very tasty.

Hands: Neutragena makes a great hand cream. It's actually clear like a gel. Ask Dis about the brand name (can't remember at the moment), because her B swears by it.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. That chapped knitting fingers thing happens to me all the time. You could also maybe just switch to knitting nothing but cashmere, but a little of that Neutrogena is probably cheaper ;)
